Course Overview

Mindfulness in Surgical Training (MiST) is a modified mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) curriculum for surgical residents. It uses principles from MBCT, an evidence-based cognitive therapy program that has been shown to enhance wellbeing, stress resistance, learning and memory, and performance.

This 12-week course was designed with an appreciation of the time pressures that make traditional mindfulness courses difficult to pursue in surgical training. MiST consists of weekly 30 minute facilitator-led Zoom sessions, as well as access to online videos, meditations, home practices, and guest surgeon testimonials for asynchronous learning

Through these weeks, you will become equipped with a toolkit of mindfulness practices and meditations tailored specifically for you as a surgical resident to integrate into your daily routines. Guided exercises will be framed in the context of your training to help you develop an approach to common stressors in your work and personal lives, and cope with feelings of anxiety, stress, burnout, and imposter syndrome.
